China Festival Calendar

Most traditional Chinese festivals are based on the Chinese lunar calendar. The lunar calendar has 29.5 days a month so solar dates and festival dates will change year-to-year. Many of the festivals are celebrated in China, Taiwan, and by overseas Chinese communities.

 

Chinese Festivals and Holidays

Spring - February through April

 

1st Lunar Month
Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) - 1st day of the 1st lunar month
Lantern Festival - 15th day of the 1st lunar month
Hezhe Spring Festival - 1st day of the 1st lunar month

 

2nd Lunar Month
Tibetan New Year

 

3rd Lunar Month
Water Splashing Festival
Tomb-Sweeping Festival begins every year on April 5th (Gregorian calendar).

 

Summer - May through July

 

5th Lunar Month
Dragon Boat Festival - 5th day of the 5th lunar month

International Labor Day - May 1-3 (Gregorian calendar).

 

Autumn - August through October

 

7th Lunar Month

Ghost Festival (Zhongyuan Festival) - 15th day of the 7th lunar month

 

8th Lunar Month
Moon Festival (Mid-Autumn Festival) - 15th day of the 8th lunar month

 

9th Lunar Month
Double Ninth Festival - 9th day of the 9th lunar month

 

Winter - November through January

 

Christmas - December 25th (Gregorian calendar).
New Year's Day - January 1st (Gregorian calendar).
