The Dolpo Region lies in Western Nepal , an area of remote, high-altitude lakes and valleys. This less accessible Region is dolpopossiblyDolpo Trekking best known as the background of Peter Mattheissen 's book "The Snow Leopard." In this book Mattheissen describes his search for the elusive creature with world-renowned animal biologist George Schaller , author of "Stones of Silence." This search took them on an incredible trek to Shey Gompa in the northern part of Dolpo, also known as Inner Dolpo.

Dolpo and Western Nepal are very lightly trekked and trekking there is described in "Off the Booted Track" (see link at left). Visits to Shey Gompa, however, are restricted to camping groups. A special permit, as expensive as for Mustang, is required, and again a liaison (or environmental) officer must accompany the group.

The Inner Dolpo trek starts from the spectacular turquoise Phoksumdo Lake (3660m) to which we trek either from Dolpo airport in Juphal (3 -- 4 days) or from Jumla airport (8 days across the Kagmara La, a5115m). The round trip restricted trek from the Lake north to Shey requires 5 or 6 days.
